Statement

Research purpose

The idea that a drawing is something flat showed in a frame behind glass, encourages me to work in the opposite way. I want my drawings to be a part of the room. The possibility of the drawing to be both flat and sculptural fascinates me.

My theoretical aspects would be to observe social structures, different relationships and the memory together with the identity. My question is what form people’s identity, and if it’s cultural based?

The driving force in my practical working process is the paper as a material, which gives me unlimited possibilities to work in literally all kinds of directions. It’s important for me and my work to get new approaches, influences, se new places and collect new material. I work studio based with the drawing in installations, objects and flat my theme of study would be both a theoretical and a practical investigation.

Research plan, method

My main working material is paper and graphite drawing. I have chosen to work consistent in black and white, this is because I seek alternative worlds rather than a truthful copy of the reality. In my working process I work with adding and removing, erasing and drawing, building and cutting. I want to include and exclude the viewer. The way you can use the paper both flat and three-dimensional is an unlimited way of working that I want to develop. My goal is to make pieces that are connected to the room and make the viewer feel that they are inside my artwork. I’m also interested to develop the way I can make my drawings move.

The Japanese traditions of Origami, Paper Art, Drawing and painting with ink would nourish the practical side of my Art. The aim of this research would be to collect new impressions and to closely observe a different culture. I often find inspiration in my environment, both in the nature and the city landscape. The things that are moving, fragile and changeable makes me want to capture them.

My method would be to go to Contemporary Art Museums and Galleries, do research and study the Japanese paper and drawing traditions. With the guidance and supervision from teachers and students combined with the inspiring environment in the school I would continue to work dedicated with my art.

The reasons I hope to study in Tokyo Zokei University

The possibility to combine my Bachelor’s degree of Fine Art at Konstfack in Sweden with an exchange term at Tokyo Zokei University would give me new levels in my education. I seek the knowledge to develop my Art and I believe that an exchange would be invaluable for my working progress. The reason for choosing Tokyo Zokei University is because of the many possibilities of education. The painting department seems to be open to new influences and ways of working, which would be fertile for my Art.

The Japanese traditions of working with paper, like Origami, drawings and ink paintings is close to the way I’m working and would be encouraging for me to experience more closely. This is also a chance for me to mix my Swedish experiences with the Japanese Traditions and Contemporary Art. I also have personal interest in the Asian culture especially the Japanese containing art, Manga, Anime, the language and the music.

Sweden-Japan foundation privileges hardworking, dedicated and promising students who wants to study abroad in Japan. I have received a scholarship for my possible studies at Tokyo Zokei University.

Theme of study

I work with the structures and the constructions of the memory. Since a memory is something temporary and fluent it is impossible to trust; you can never be sure if you’re remembering an event correctly. I find similarities between daydreams, dreams and memories. The essence in a persons identity lies in his and her memory. The past forms individuals and their personality yet personalities are also changeable and inconsistent. In the same way small details can be crucial in a memory, I like to discover the small objects in life. The things that are invisible to many people, it could be a corner of a window, some grey dust or a forgotten piece of plastic. I want to reveal the forgotten memories of objects and make them come to life again thought my art.
